A laptop can have a great processor, plenty of RAM, and a fast SSD — and still be a frustrating purchase if the battery is worn out. Batteries degrade with age and use, and on a used or refurbished laptop, battery health can vary enormously between two units of the exact same model. Here's how to check it.
Why Battery Health Matters More Than People Think
Lithium-ion batteries (the kind in every laptop) lose capacity over charge cycles, regardless of brand or care. A battery rated for "up to 8 hours" when new might only deliver 3-4 hours after a few years of heavy use — or far less if it's badly degraded.
If you don't check battery health before buying, you might end up needing a replacement battery within months — an extra cost that erases whatever you saved buying refurbished in the first place.
How to Check Battery Health on Windows
- Open the Start Menu and type
cmd - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
- Type:
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter - This generates a report (usually saved to your user folder) showing Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity
How to read it: Compare the two numbers. If "Full Charge Capacity" is significantly lower than "Design Capacity" — for example, 30% lower or more — the battery has degraded noticeably and you should factor that into your decision or ask for a discount.
What to Ask the Seller
- "What's the battery health percentage on this laptop?"
- "How many charge cycles has it been through, if known?"
- "Has the battery been replaced, or is it original?"
A seller who has genuinely tested the laptop should be able to answer the first question without hesitation.
Physical Warning Signs of a Bad Battery
- The laptop only works while plugged in, or shuts off instantly when unplugged
- The laptop feels swollen or the bottom panel doesn't sit flush
- Battery percentage drops unusually fast (e.g. from 100% to 50% in 20 minutes)
- The laptop gets noticeably hot near the battery area
If you notice any of these in person before buying, walk away or ask for a battery replacement as a condition of the sale.
