RAM is the one specification where you can genuinely feel the difference — and also the one where buyers most often overpay for capacity they will never use.
Here is the honest position: 8GB is enough for most people in Rwanda in 2026. But the group for whom 16GB is transformative is larger than it was three years ago, and if you are in it, no other upgrade comes close.
This guide helps you decide which side of that line you are on.
What RAM Actually Does
RAM is your laptop's working desk. Every open application — each browser tab, your spreadsheet, the video call, the PDF viewer, the antivirus running quietly in the background — occupies space on that desk while it runs.
When the desk fills up, Windows starts moving things to your SSD to make room. That process is called paging, and it is roughly a hundred times slower than RAM. It is what people mean when they say a laptop "suddenly got slow" after a few months.
The critical distinction: more RAM does not make any single task faster. It determines how many things you can run at once before everything slows down. A processor upgrade makes tasks faster. A RAM upgrade makes your laptop stop stuttering.
What 8GB Really Handles in 2026
Let us be concrete rather than vague. On a Windows 11 machine with 8GB, Windows itself uses roughly 3–4GB before you open anything. That leaves about 4–5GB of working space.
Comfortable on 8GB:
- 10–15 browser tabs
- Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint together
- A Teams, Zoom or Google Meet call — including with background blur
- Accounting software such as QuickBooks or Sage
- Light photo editing
- A code editor with a small to medium project
- Streaming music while you work
That covers the daily reality of most students, office workers, accountants and managers in Rwanda. If your day is described above, 8GB is genuinely sufficient and 16GB is money you do not need to spend.
Where 8GB starts to break down:
- 25+ browser tabs, especially with Google Docs, Figma or web applications open
- A large Excel model recalculating while other applications run
- Docker, virtual machines, or a local database server
- Photoshop or Illustrator with large files
- Any video editing beyond simple trimming
- Android Studio, or a full IDE with a large codebase indexed
What 16GB Changes
With 16GB, Windows takes its 3–4GB and you still have 12GB of working space. In practice this means:
You stop thinking about it. The most accurate description of 16GB from users who upgrade is not "it is faster" — it is "I stopped closing tabs." The mental overhead of managing what is open disappears.
Heavy applications stop fighting each other. Running an IDE, a local server, Docker and a browser simultaneously is routine on 16GB and painful on 8GB.
The machine ages better. Applications get heavier every year. A 16GB machine bought in 2026 will still feel comfortable in 2031; an 8GB machine will feel tight by 2029.

Can You Upgrade RAM Later?
Often yes — and this is worth knowing before you buy.
Most HP EliteBook and ProBook models have one soldered RAM module and one accessible slot, meaning a machine sold as 8GB can frequently be taken to 16GB by adding a module. Some models have two accessible slots; a few have everything soldered and cannot be upgraded at all.
This varies by exact model and configuration, so do not assume it. Ask us before you buy — contact us with the model you are considering and we will tell you whether that specific unit can be upgraded, and what it would cost.
If a machine is upgradeable, buying 8GB now and adding 8GB when you actually need it is a perfectly sensible strategy — and usually cheaper than buying 16GB up front.
Do Not Confuse RAM With Storage
A surprisingly common mix-up, and an expensive one:
RAM is temporary working memory. It empties every time you shut down. 8GB or 16GB.
Storage (SSD) is where your files and programs permanently live. 256GB or 512GB.
