Touchscreen vs Convertible — Know the Difference
Not all "touchscreen laptops" are the same thing:
Touchscreen only. The screen responds to touch, but the hinge stops at the usual angle. You can tap and scroll, but you cannot use it as a tablet. Limited benefit.
360-degree convertible (2-in-1). The hinge rotates a full 360 degrees, so the machine works in four modes: laptop, tablet, tent (for presentations), and stand (for watching or reading). This is the version worth buying — and every model in this guide is one.
Detachable. The screen separates entirely from the keyboard. Rare in Rwanda, and usually a compromised laptop.

Why it stands out: It is the fastest convertible on this list and by some distance the most beautiful object. The i7 handles design software, video editing and heavy multitasking that the Core i5 models will labour over. If you want a premium laptop and a tablet in one, this is it.

3. Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga — Best for Handwriting and Note-Taking
Price: RWF 399,000 (down from RWF 430,000)
The X380 Yoga is the note-taker's convertible. It combines a 360-degree Full HD touchscreen with stylus support and the ThinkPad keyboard — widely considered the best keyboard in the laptop industry.
Why it wins for notes: Stylus support is the difference between a touchscreen you tap and a touchscreen you write on. The cheapest genuine 360-degree convertible in Rwanda. An 11.6-inch HD touchscreen in HP's education-grade chassis, built to survive daily transport in a school bag.
Be realistic about it: this is an entry-level machine. It handles browsing, documents, online classes and note-taking well. It will struggle with heavy multitasking or demanding software. But at RWF 245,000 for a working touchscreen convertible, nothing else in the country competes — and we hold good stock.
Best for: Secondary and TVET students, online learners, and first laptops.

Is a Touchscreen Actually Worth It for You?
Buy a convertible if you:
- Take handwritten notes, diagrams or equations
- Present to clients or classes and want tent mode
- Annotate PDFs, contracts, drawings or student work
- Sketch, mark up designs, or work visually
- Read a lot and want a tablet without buying a second device
Skip it and buy a standard laptop if you:
- Mostly type documents, code or spreadsheets
- Need maximum performance per franc — the same money buys more machine without touch
- Want the longest battery life; touch layers consume extra power
- Need a larger 14-inch or 15-inch screen — most convertibles are 13.3 inches or smaller

Three Things to Check on Any Used Convertible
Test the hinge through its full rotation. Fold it all the way to tablet mode and back. It should feel firm at every angle with no creaking, wobble or resistance. The hinge is the part that wears on a 2-in-1.
Test touch across the whole screen. Drag a finger slowly into every corner. Dead zones in the corners are a common fault on used touch panels and are easy to miss in a quick check.
Confirm auto-rotation works. Fold to tablet mode and check the display orients itself. If it does not, the accelerometer has failed — a fault that makes tablet mode largely useless.
