But "ThinkPad" is a range, not a model. A ThinkPad L series and a ThinkPad X1 Carbon are very different machines at very different prices. This guide explains which ThinkPad is which, what to pay in Rwanda, and which model we currently have in stock at PrimeTech Rwanda.
The ThinkPad Range, Decoded
Four letters cover almost every ThinkPad you will encounter in Rwanda:
X series — Compact and premium. 12.5 to 14 inches, the lightest ThinkPads, built for people who travel. The X380 Yoga and X390 Yoga add a 360-degree touchscreen. The X1 Carbon is the flagship.
T series — The workhorse. 14 to 15 inches, the model most large organisations buy in volume, and consequently the most common ThinkPad on the refurbished market. The T480, T490 and T14 are the ones to look for.
L series — The budget business line. Same durability approach, cheaper materials, heavier. Fine value, less impressive to use.
P series — Mobile workstations, certified for CAD and professional software. Powerful, heavy, expensive.
E series — Lenovo's entry business line. Closer to a consumer laptop than a true ThinkPad. Set expectations accordingly.
If someone offers you "a ThinkPad" without a model number, that is not enough information to judge the price. Always get the exact model — T480, X380 Yoga, L14 — before agreeing to anything.

A note on availability: ThinkPads reach Rwanda in far smaller numbers than HP business laptops, because the corporate fleets that supply this market skew heavily toward HP. What to Pay for a ThinkPad in Rwanda
Use this as a sanity check against any seller's price:

If a price sits well below these ranges, something is wrong with the machine — most often the battery, the storage type, or the RAM. If it sits well above, you are paying for the badge.
ThinkPad vs HP EliteBook in Rwanda
Both are excellent. The honest comparison:
ThinkPad advantages: the best keyboard in the industry by consensus, the TrackPoint if you learn to use it, generally better serviceability, and outstanding official repair documentation.
EliteBook advantages in Rwanda specifically: far better availability, materially better parts supply in Kigali, more technicians who know the machines, and usually better price for equivalent specification because supply is higher.
That last group is not a small consideration. A ThinkPad with a failed keyboard can wait weeks for a part in Rwanda; an EliteBook keyboard is straightforward to source. If you are choosing on ownership experience rather than brand preference, availability is a real factor.

Five Checks Before Buying Any Used ThinkPad
1. Confirm the exact model and year. Type the model number into a search. A T440 and a T480 look similar and are four generations apart.
2. Check both batteries. Many T-series ThinkPads use an internal battery plus a removable external one. Sellers sometimes quote only the healthy one. Ask for both figures.
3. Test the TrackPoint and all three mouse buttons. The middle scroll button is the one that fails most often, and it is the one you will use constantly.
4. Confirm the display resolution. Many ThinkPads shipped in both HD (1366×768) and Full HD versions. The HD panels are noticeably worse and should cost meaningfully less.
5. Test the keyboard key by key. ThinkPad keyboards are excellent but not immortal, and a replacement is one of the harder parts to source in Rwanda.
