First: Why a Workstation at All?
If you are unsure whether you need one, the distinction is worth understanding.
Certification is the point. Software vendors — Autodesk, Esri, Adobe, Dassault — test and certify specific workstation models with specific drivers. That certification means AutoCAD, Revit, ArcGIS or Premiere Pro will run predictably rather than crashing in ways nobody can diagnose. A standard laptop may run the same software; it is simply not validated to.
Sustained load is the other point. Workstations are built with cooling and power delivery designed for hours at full load — rendering, exporting, simulating. Business laptops throttle under that kind of use.
The Firefly specifically is HP's thin-and-light workstation line. Roughly the size and weight of a large EliteBook, but with workstation internals and certification. It is the practical choice for professionals who need workstation capability but also have to carry the machine to sites and client meetings.

Note that RAM and storage are identical — 8GB and 512GB on both. The only meaningful variable is the processor generation.
What Actually Changed Between G7 and G8
Integrated graphics — the real difference
This is the upgrade that matters most for this class of machine. The 11th-generation Intel chips in the G8 use Iris Xe graphics, a substantial step up from the UHD graphics in the 10th-generation G7 — commonly around 50–70% faster in graphics-bound work.
For a workstation buyer, that is directly relevant. Viewport performance in CAD, map rendering in GIS, and timeline scrubbing in video editing all lean on integrated graphics. This is not a marginal gain.
Processor performance
Roughly 10–20% faster in general CPU work. Meaningful under sustained load — rendering, exporting, simulation — and largely imperceptible in everyday tasks.
Efficiency and battery
The 11th-generation platform is more power-efficient, so the G8 runs longer on a charge under comparable load.
Support horizon
The G8 is a year newer, which means roughly a year more of comfortable use and driver support before it starts feeling dated. On a machine you are buying to keep for five or six years, that is worth factoring in.

Our Verdict: Buy the G8
For once, this is not a close call — and the reason is not the processor.
Buy the G8 at RWF 630,000 because:
The graphics gap is large and directly relevant. Iris Xe versus UHD is the biggest single difference between these machines, and viewport, rendering and timeline performance is precisely what a workstation buyer is paying for. RWF 45,000 for that improvement is good value.
Stock depth matters more than people expect. We hold five G8 units and one G7. If a machine you depend on professionally develops a fault, a replacement or a donor unit for parts being available is worth real money. On a single-unit model, it is not.
The extra year of support matters on a machine intended to last five or six years.
Buy the G7 at RWF 585,000 only if:
- Your budget genuinely stops at RWF 600,000
- Your work is CPU-bound rather than graphics-bound — data processing, large spreadsheet models, rendering handled by a desktop or server
- The G8 is out of stock and you need a machine now
The G7 is a very good machine. It is simply not RWF 45,000 worse than the G8 — it is a bit more than that once you weigh graphics performance and stock depth.
Should You Buy a Workstation At All?
Worth checking before you spend RWF 585,000 or more. Compare against the alternative:

Choose the EliteBook 840 G7 i7 if your heavy work is CPU and memory bound: large datasets, statistical analysis, software development, big financial models, heavy multitasking. For these, 16GB of RAM beats workstation certification every time.
Choose a ZBook Firefly if your work is graphics bound and vendor certified: AutoCAD, Revit, ArcGIS, SketchUp, Premiere Pro, Photoshop with large files. Here the certification and graphics are the entire point, and no amount of RAM substitutes.
A note on RAM: both Fireflies ship with 8GB, which is modest for professional creative work. Ask us whether the specific unit can be upgraded to 16GB and what that would cost — for most workstation users, that upgrade is worth doing. Contact us before you buy.
