Decoding the Range Before You Judge a Price
"ThinkPad" spans a very wide quality band, and sellers rarely volunteer which tier they are offering:
X series — compact and premium. The lightest ThinkPads, 12.5 to 14 inches. The X380 Yoga and X390 Yoga add a 360-degree touchscreen. The X1 Carbon is the flagship.
T series — the workhorse, and the most common ThinkPad on the refurbished market because organisations buy it in volume.
L series — the budget business line. Same durability approach, cheaper materials, heavier. Fine value, less impressive to use.
P series — mobile workstations, certified for CAD and professional software.
E series — Lenovo's entry business line, closer to a consumer laptop than a true ThinkPad. Should cost noticeably less than a T or X series.
Never accept "it's a ThinkPad" as a specification. Get the exact model number — T480, X380 Yoga, L14 — before discussing price. The difference between an E series and an X series at the same price is enormous.
Why ThinkPads Cost More Here Than Equivalent HP
Two supply-side reasons, neither about build quality:
Scarcity. Very few ThinkPads reach Rwanda relative to HP. Scarcity supports higher asking prices even for older machines.
Parts. A ThinkPad keyboard, screen or battery is considerably harder to source in Kigali than the HP equivalent. A fault that would be a same-week repair on an EliteBook can mean weeks of waiting on a ThinkPad.
The counterweight is real: the ThinkPad keyboard is widely considered the best in the industry, the magnesium roll-cage construction is excellent, and Lenovo's repair documentation is outstanding. If you type for a living, that keyboard is worth paying for.

Five Checks Before You Pay for Any ThinkPad
1. Confirm the exact model and year. A T440 and a T480 look similar and are four generations apart. Search the model number before agreeing a price.
2. Check both batteries. Many T-series ThinkPads use an internal battery plus a removable external one. Sellers sometimes quote only the healthy figure. Ask for both.
3. Confirm the display resolution. Many ThinkPads shipped in both HD (1366×768) and Full HD versions. The HD panels are noticeably worse and should cost meaningfully less.
4. Test the TrackPoint and all three mouse buttons. The middle scroll button fails most often and is the one you would use constantly.
5. Test every key. ThinkPad keyboards are excellent but not immortal, and a replacement is one of the harder parts to source in Rwanda.
