Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements than previous versions of Windows — which means not every older laptop can run it, even if it runs Windows 10 perfectly well. Here's what actually determines compatibility, and what to look for when buying a refurbished laptop.
Microsoft's Official Requirements for Windows 11
- Processor: A compatible 64-bit processor with at least 2 cores at 1GHz or faster — generally Intel 8th-generation Core processors and newer, though some specific 7th-gen chips are also supported
- RAM: 4GB minimum (8GB is the realistic comfortable minimum for actual use)
- Storage: 64GB minimum
- TPM: Version 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) — a security chip built into the motherboard
- Secure Boot: Must be supported and enabled in the laptop's firmware
- Graphics: DirectX 12 compatible
The two requirements that trip up older laptops most often are TPM 2.0 and processor generation — many laptops from before 2018 simply don't have a TPM 2.0 chip, regardless of how powerful the processor otherwise is.
How to Check If Your Laptop Supports Windows 11
- Download Microsoft's PC Health Check app directly from Microsoft's website
- Run the check — it will tell you clearly whether your machine is compatible, and if not, exactly which requirement it fails
- Alternatively, type
tpm.mscinto the Windows search bar to check your TPM version directly
What This Means When Buying Refurbished
When buying a refurbished laptop, the processor generation is the quickest way to estimate Windows 11 compatibility:
- 6th and 7th-generation Intel Core processors: Mixed compatibility — some specific models are supported, many are not. Check before assuming.
- 8th-generation and newer: Generally compatible, assuming TPM 2.0 is present (most business laptops from this era include it).
- 11th and 12th-generation: Fully compatible and future-proof for Windows 11 updates for years to come.

Should You Worry If Your Laptop Can't Run Windows 11?
Not urgently. Microsoft continues to support Windows 10 with security updates for a defined period, so an older laptop running Windows 10 isn't suddenly unsafe or unusable. But if you're buying a laptop you expect to use for several more years, choosing one that's Windows 11 compatible from the start avoids needing to upgrade hardware sooner than necessary.
