Windows 11 runs well on business laptops several generations old — but its default settings assume a fast connection, plentiful storage and a new machine. Adjusting a handful of them makes a real difference, particularly on a refurbished laptop and particularly on Rwandan data costs.
These fifteen are the ones we actually recommend to customers, grouped by what they achieve.
Make It Faster
1. Cut the startup programs
The highest-impact change on this list. Every application that loads itself at startup delays the moment your laptop becomes usable.
Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps. Sort by "Startup impact" and disable everything marked High that you do not need immediately.
Safe to disable: chat apps, update helpers, printer utilities, media players, manufacturer bloatware. Leave antivirus and touchpad drivers alone.
2. Turn off visual effects
Windows 11's animations look pleasant and cost performance on older hardware.
Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects → turn off Animation effects and Transparency effects.
On an 8th generation machine or older, this makes the interface feel noticeably more responsive.
3. Set the power mode correctly
Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode.
Set Best performance when plugged in, and Best power efficiency on battery. Many laptops ship in Balanced permanently, which leaves performance unused while plugged in.
4. Run Storage Sense
Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense → turn on.
It automatically clears temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin. Keeping 15–20% of your drive free is necessary for the drive to perform properly — a nearly-full SSD is measurably slower.
5. Uninstall what you do not use
Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Sort by size. Refurbished machines often arrive with software from a previous configuration that you will never open.
6. Restart weekly
Sleep is not a restart. Windows needs a genuine restart to complete updates and clear accumulated memory. A machine that "gets slower through the week" is usually one that has not been restarted in weeks.
Save Data — Specific to Rwanda
Data is a real cost here, and Windows 11 defaults assume it is not.
7. Set your connection as metered
Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → [your network] → Metered connection → on.
This is the single most valuable data-saving setting in Windows. It stops automatic large downloads, pauses non-critical updates, and limits background sync. Turn it on for any mobile hotspot or capped connection.
8. Control when Windows Update downloads
Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Active hours. Set these to your working day so updates do not download while you are trying to work.
Also turn off "Delivery Optimization → Allow downloads from other PCs" — it uses your upload bandwidth to serve updates to other machines.
9. Turn off OneDrive automatic backup if you are on mobile data
OneDrive syncing a photo library over a mobile connection is an expensive surprise. OneDrive settings → Sync and backup → review what is being backed up, and pause sync on metered connections.
10. Set Microsoft Store apps to update manually
Microsoft Store → Profile → Settings → App updates → off. Update deliberately, when you are on a connection you are not paying by the megabyte for.
Work Faster
11. Snap Layouts
Hover over the maximise button of any window — or press Windows + Z — to choose a split-screen layout. On a 14-inch screen, side-by-side document and browser is a genuine productivity gain.
Faster still: Windows + ← and Windows + → snap the current window to half the screen.
12. Virtual desktops
Windows + Ctrl + D creates a new desktop; Windows + Ctrl + ←/→ switches between them.
Genuinely useful on a single-screen laptop — keep work on one desktop and everything else on another.
13. The shortcuts actually worth memorising

Windows + V is the underrated one — it keeps a history of everything you have copied, so you stop losing text you copied two steps ago. Turn it on the first time you press it.
14. Search from the keyboard
Press Windows, start typing, press Enter. Faster than navigating menus for launching any application or finding any setting. Most people never stop using the mouse for this.
Stay Secure
15. Use Windows Security and let it update
Windows 11's built-in Windows Security is genuinely competent and free. You do not need to buy a separate antivirus for ordinary use.
What matters more than which antivirus you run:
- Install Windows updates. Security patches are the main defence, and skipping them is the most common way machines get compromised.
- Avoid pirated software and "cracked" activators. These require disabling your antivirus to install, which is the entire attack. This is the most common infection route we see in Rwanda.
- Turn on Find My Device — Settings → Privacy & security → Find my device. Free, and valuable if the laptop is ever lost or stolen.
Does Your Laptop Support Windows 11?
If you are still on Windows 10 or considering a refurbished machine, check compatibility first — some laptops simply need TPM 2.0 enabled in BIOS, which is a settings change rather than a hardware limitation.
