Two rows deserve attention. The keyboards are the same size — HP does not shrink the keys on the 830, so typing feels identical on both. And the convertible only exists in the 830 size, which matters if you want a touchscreen 2-in-1.
The Case for the 830 (13.3-inch)
It fits where the 840 does not. An aeroplane tray table, a bus seat, a crowded café table, a lecture hall flip-desk, the passenger seat of a car. If you regularly work in cramped spaces, the smaller footprint is not a marginal convenience — it is the difference between working and not working.
You will actually carry it. The weight difference sounds trivial written down. Carried in a bag every day for a year, alongside a charger and a notebook, it is not.
Battery life is often slightly better, because there is less screen to power.

The Case for the 840 (14-inch)
More usable screen. The extra 0.7 inches sounds small, but on a Full HD panel it means legible text at a comfortable size, and enough room to work with two windows side by side — a spreadsheet and a browser, or a document and a reference PDF. On a 13.3-inch screen, side-by-side work is cramped.
Better for long desk sessions. If your laptop mostly sits on a desk and you work on it for hours, the larger display reduces eye strain meaningfully.
Wider availability and better pricing. The 840 is the volume model — organisations buy it in far greater numbers, so more units reach the refurbished market. In practice this means more configurations, better stock levels, and often better value.

Where will this laptop spend most of its life?
Mostly on one desk → buy the 840. You get more screen for the same money, and the weight never matters because you rarely carry it. If you are at a desk, also consider adding an external monitor and a docking station — that combination beats any laptop screen.
Moving between places most days → buy the 830. Field visits, client meetings, campus, commuting, travel. The smaller body earns its keep every day.
