A headset microphone sits near your mouth. It captures your voice loudly and everything else quietly. The difference in how you come across professionally is larger than most people expect until they hear a recording of themselves.

USB vs 3.5mm — the Difference That Actually Matters
This is the real decision, and it is not obvious from the specifications.
A 3.5mm headset uses your laptop's built-in sound card. Audio quality — and more importantly microphone quality — depends entirely on how good that sound card is. On business laptops it is usually adequate. On older machines it is often noisy, and you may hear a faint hiss or electrical whine that your callers hear too.
A USB headset bypasses the laptop's sound card completely and uses its own. Audio processing happens in the headset, which means:
- Consistent quality on any machine — plug it into any laptop and it sounds the same
- No interference from the laptop's internal electronics
- Hardware mute and volume that work independently of software, which is genuinely useful mid-call
- No combined-jack problems (see below)
The combined-jack issue, specifically: most modern laptops have a single 3.5mm port that handles both headphone and microphone through one connector. Older headsets with separate plugs need an adapter. The H111 has a single combined plug, so it works — but on a machine with separate ports, you would need a splitter.
Our recommendation: if you take calls most days, the H390's USB connection is worth the difference. If calls are occasional, the H111 does the job well.

What "Noise-Cancelling Microphone" Means Here
Worth clarifying, because the phrase is used for two different things.
Noise-cancelling microphone (what both these have) means the microphone rejects background sound so your callers hear less of your environment. This is what matters for calls.
Active noise cancellation (ANC) means the headphones reduce background noise so you hear less of your environment. Neither of these headsets has it, and for office and study use you generally do not want it — hearing your surroundings is usually preferable.
If a listing advertises "noise cancelling" without specifying which, assume it means the microphone.
Which Should You Buy?
Buy the H390 if you:
- Take calls most working days
- Work remotely, especially for international clients
- Have had people say they cannot hear you clearly
- Use several different computers
- Want hardware mute you can hit instantly
Buy the H111 if you:
- Attend online classes but do not work on calls
- Need something functional at the lowest sensible price
- Are buying several for a household or classroom
- Take calls occasionally rather than daily
Buy neither if you take almost no calls — put the money toward a laptop stand or a mouse instead, which you will use every day.
Care and Lifespan
Headsets are consumables. Treated well, these last years; treated carelessly, months.
The cable is what fails first, and almost always at the plug. Do not wrap the cable tightly around the headset — coil it loosely.
Do not hang it by the microphone boom. The boom joint is the second most common failure point.
Ear cushions compress over time. On the H390 they are replaceable, which is worth knowing before you replace the whole headset.
Store it off the floor. Wheeled chairs and cables are natural enemies.
