Modern business laptops have shed ports. An EliteBook 840 G7 gives you far fewer connections than an 840 G3 did, and that trend is not reversing. A USB-C hub is how you get them back.
But hubs are sold on the one number that matters least — how many ports they have — and buying on that number is how people end up with a hub that cannot drive their monitor properly or charge their laptop at full speed.
This guide covers what actually matters.
Hub or Dock? They Are Not the Same
A USB-C hub is a small, portable, bus-powered device. It draws its power from your laptop and adds ports. Good for travel, fine for light use, cannot power demanding peripherals.
A docking station has its own power supply. It can charge your laptop while driving monitors and running peripherals simultaneously. It lives on your desk.
Which you need: if it stays on one desk and you want one cable to connect everything including power, you want a dock. If you carry it between places and just need HDMI and a couple of USB ports, a hub is lighter and cheaper.
The Four Things That Actually Matter
1. Power Delivery (PD) pass-through — the one most people miss
This is the single most important specification, and it is frequently omitted from listings.
Without PD pass-through, plugging the hub into your only USB-C port means you have given up charging. Your laptop runs down while connected to your monitor.
What to check: does the hub have a USB-C port marked PD or charging, and what wattage does it support?
- 60W minimum for a 13–14 inch business laptop
- 90–100W if you have a workstation or a larger machine
Also note: hubs lose some wattage in transit. A hub rated "100W PD" typically delivers around 85W to the laptop. Budget for that.
2. HDMI resolution and refresh rate
A listing saying "HDMI 4K" is telling you half the story. Ask for the refresh rate.
4K at 30Hz is the common cheap-hub specification, and it is genuinely unpleasant for daily work — the mouse cursor visibly stutters. Fine for presentations, poor for eight hours of spreadsheets.
4K at 60Hz is what you want. 1080p at 60Hz is perfectly good and what most people actually run.
The honest advice for Rwanda: most buyers here pair a laptop with a 1080p monitor. If that is you, 1080p60 is all you need and you should not pay extra for 4K capability you will not use.
3. Data speed on the USB ports
Ports look identical and are not.
- USB 2.0 — about 480 Mbps. Fine for a mouse, keyboard or wireless receiver. Painfully slow for an external drive.
- USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen 1 — about 5 Gbps. What you want for external storage.
A hub advertising "8 ports" where six are USB 2.0 is worse than a four-port hub with three USB 3.0. Always ask which ports are which.
4. Heat and build
Hubs get warm — that is normal and unavoidable, since they are converting and routing a lot of signal. Aluminium housings dissipate heat far better than plastic and are noticeably more reliable over time.
A hub that gets hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch is one that will start dropping connections within a year.

Before You Buy: Check Your Laptop's Port
Not every USB-C port is equal, and this catches people out.
Does your USB-C port support video output? Some laptops have USB-C ports that carry data and power only. If yours does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode, no hub in the world will get video out of it.
How to check: look for a small DisplayPort logo (D-shaped) or a Thunderbolt lightning-bolt icon beside the port. If there is no marking, check your model's specification sheet — or send us the model and we will tell you.
Business laptops are generally safe here. HP EliteBook, ProBook and ZBook models from the G5 generation onward support video over USB-C. Older machines and budget consumer laptops often do not.

A laptop stand raises the screen to eye level, an external keyboard and mouse let you type comfortably at that height, and the hub connects all of it with one cable. Together these cost less than a laptop upgrade and do more for daily comfort.
Common Mistakes
Buying on port count. Eight USB 2.0 ports is worse than three USB 3.0 ports.
Ignoring power delivery. The most common regret. You discover it the first afternoon your battery runs flat while plugged into your monitor.
Assuming 4K means 4K60. Check the refresh rate.
Buying the cheapest available. Hubs handle your data, your display signal and your charging current. A failing hub causes intermittent faults that are genuinely difficult to diagnose — a monitor that flickers, a drive that disconnects mid-copy.
Not checking the laptop supports video over USB-C. No hub can add a capability the port does not have.
