Power banks are genuinely useful in Rwanda — power interruptions are a real part of working life, and a phone that dies mid-day is a business problem, not just an inconvenience.
They are also the accessory category with the most misleading marketing. The headline capacity is not the capacity you get, and the great majority of power banks sold cannot charge a laptop at all regardless of what the box implies.
Here is how to read the real numbers.
The Capacity Number Is Not What You Get
A power bank advertised at 10,000mAh does not deliver 10,000mAh to your phone. Two things eat into it:
Voltage conversion loss. The cells inside run at 3.7V; your phone charges at 5V. Converting between them loses energy as heat — typically 20–30%.
The power bank's own overhead. Its circuitry consumes some too.
Realistic rule: you get about 65–70% of the printed capacity.
So a genuine 10,000mAh power bank delivers roughly 6,500–7,000mAh of usable charge. For a phone with a 4,500mAh battery, that is about one and a half full charges — not the "3 charges!" often claimed.
If a listing promises figures that assume no conversion loss, the seller either does not understand the product or is counting on you not to.
Can It Charge a Laptop? Usually Not
This is where most disappointment happens.
Charging a laptop requires two things that most power banks lack:
1. USB-C Power Delivery (PD) output. Not just a USB-C shaped port — the PD protocol specifically. A USB-C port that only does 5V/3A will not charge a laptop.
2. Enough wattage.

3. And enough capacity to be worth it. A 14-inch business laptop battery holds roughly 50Wh. A 20,000mAh power bank holds about 74Wh on paper, or around 50Wh usable — so one full laptop charge from a large, expensive power bank.
The honest conclusion: for laptop charging, a power bank is emergency insurance, not a power solution. If you regularly work where there is no power, the better investment is a laptop with genuinely good battery life — which in practice means a newer processor generation. Extending battery life.
What to Look For
Real capacity, stated honestly. 10,000mAh and 20,000mAh are the useful sizes. Anything claiming 50,000mAh at a low price is not what it says — genuine cells of that capacity cost real money and weigh a lot.
Output wattage in watts, not just "fast charging". "Fast" is marketing; watts are a specification.
Pass-through charging — the ability to charge the power bank while it charges your device. Genuinely convenient overnight.
Multiple ports if you carry a phone and earbuds.
Weight. A 20,000mAh bank is roughly twice the weight of a 10,000mAh one. If it is too heavy to carry, you will leave it at home and it will do nothing for you.
Wireless charging is convenient but noticeably less efficient than cable — you lose more of that already-reduced capacity. Useful as a secondary feature, not a reason to buy.

Be sceptical below RWF 15,000. At that price the cells are usually well below the stated capacity, and cheap lithium cells with poor protection circuitry are the one accessory category where safety genuinely matters.

Safety — Worth Taking Seriously
Power banks are lithium batteries, and cheap ones are the accessory most likely to cause an actual hazard:
Stop using it immediately if it swells. A bulging power bank is a fire risk. Do not charge it, do not puncture it, and dispose of it properly rather than in household waste.
Do not leave it charging overnight on a bed or sofa. Same reasoning as a laptop — heat plus lithium plus soft insulating surfaces.
Do not leave it in a hot car. Heat is what turns a marginal cell into a failed one.
Avoid the cheapest available. Protection circuitry is exactly what gets cut to hit a low price, and it is the component that prevents overcharge and overheating.
What Actually Solves the Power Problem
Being honest about where a power bank fits:
For phones: a power bank is the right answer. Cheap, portable, effective.
For laptops during short interruptions: your laptop battery already is the backup. This is a genuine advantage laptops have over desktops. Keep the battery healthy and it covers most outages. How.
For laptops during long outages: a newer-generation machine with better power efficiency does more for you than any power bank. The efficiency gains from 8th to 10th and 11th generation Intel chips are substantial.
