The most common mistake we see from students starting university in Rwanda is buying to a budget rather than to a course. A law student and a civil engineering student have genuinely different requirements, and the gap between them is larger than the gap between a good deal and a bad one.
This guide works from the course backwards.
Before Anything Else: Check With Your Department
Ask your faculty or department what software your programme requires, ideally before you buy. Requirements vary between institutions and between programmes at the same institution, and they change year to year.
The specific questions worth asking:
- Which software will I need to install on my own machine?
- Is there a minimum specification the department recommends?
- Is any software provided through the university, or must I license it myself?
- Are there computer labs for the heavy software, or is it expected on personal laptops?
That last question changes the answer completely. If your department provides lab access for AutoCAD or SPSS, you may not need a machine that runs it well — and that can save you RWF 200,000 or more.

Law, Arts, Humanities, Languages
Budget: RWF 245,000 – 350,000
Your workload is reading, writing and research. That is genuinely undemanding of hardware, and you should not let anyone convince you otherwise.
What matters: a comfortable keyboard (you will type a great deal), a screen that is pleasant to read on for hours, and battery life for long library sessions. What does not: processor power beyond a Core i5, or more than 8GB of RAM.

Budget: RWF 300,000 – 420,000
Spreadsheets are more demanding than people assume — a large model with many formulas recalculating while you have a browser and a video call open is real multitasking.
What matters: 8GB RAM minimum, and a 14-inch screen rather than 13.3-inch, because spreadsheet work benefits materially from the extra width. Which screen size.
Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health
Budget: RWF 300,000 – 430,000
Heavy reading, large PDFs, research databases, presentations, and statistics packages in later years.
What matters: a good screen (you will read on it for years), 8GB RAM, and enough storage for a large library of course material. Battery life matters on long hospital placement days.
Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT
Budget: RWF 420,000 – 550,000
The one faculty where you should stretch your budget, and where the priority order surprises people.
RAM before processor. An IDE, a local server, a database, Docker and a browser running together is what exhausts a machine — and that is a memory problem, not a processor one. 16GB is a genuine advantage here, more than an i7 would be.
Storage fills faster than you expect. Toolchains, SDKs, node_modules and container images consume space at a rate no other course matches. 512GB if you can.

Engineering, Architecture, Surveying, Land Management
Budget: RWF 460,000 – 700,000
AutoCAD, Revit, ArcGIS, Civil 3D and similar are the most demanding software any Rwandan student will run — but check the lab question first. If your department provides workstations for the heavy work, a mid-range laptop plus lab access is far better value than a workstation you use occasionally.
If you do need it on your own machine, a mobile workstation is the honest answer. These are vendor-certified for professional software, which means it runs predictably rather than crashing in ways nobody can diagnose.

Budget: RWF 435,000 – 630,000
Adobe applications and large files. Prioritise RAM and storage over processor tier, and a good screen matters more here than in any other faculty.
Design and video editing guide
Education, Social Sciences, Development Studies
Budget: RWF 280,000 – 400,000
Documents, presentations, and statistical analysis in research methods courses. A solid Core i5 with 8GB RAM covers the full degree.
The Four Specifications That Actually Matter
Ignore marketing and judge on these:
1. 8GB RAM minimum. 4GB is the specification most likely to make you regret a purchase. If your budget forces a choice between a faster processor and more memory, choose memory. 8GB vs 16GB.
2. SSD, never a mechanical hard drive. "1TB" at a low price means an HDD, which will make the machine feel broken. Why.
3. Processor generation, not the i5/i7 badge. An i5-10310U beats an i7-4600U comfortably. Explained.
4. Battery health above 70% on any used machine. A laptop tied to a power socket is a serious problem in lecture halls. How to check.
Why Refurbished Business Laptops Suit Students
At the same price, a certified refurbished business laptop gives you an aluminium chassis, a better keyboard and screen, a more capable processor, and roughly twice the service life of a new consumer machine.
It also survives student life better. These were built for corporate IT departments — carried daily, used hard, and designed to be repaired rather than replaced. Parts for HP business models are readily available in Kigali, which matters when something breaks in your third year.
Budget for the Setup, Not Just the Laptop

- A laptop stand — you will work at desks for hours, and neck strain accumulates

Timing and Money
Buy before the rush. Stock and choice are best outside the weeks immediately around the start of term, and rushed purchases are where people overpay.
