What you get: a working, reliable machine for browsing, documents, online classes and note-taking. What you give up: comfortable multitasking. Fine for most non-technical courses.
Be realistic. Below RWF 240,000 in Rwanda, what is on offer is usually very old, has a mechanical hard drive, or has a dead battery. Stretching to this band is worth it.

This is where we point most university students. A 14-inch business-class machine with a Core i5, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD handles every non-technical degree comfortably and will still be working when you graduate — and for years after.
If you can reach this band, do. The jump in capability from the entry band is larger than the price difference suggests.

What Students Consistently Overspend On
A processor upgrade you will not use. Moving from i5 to i7 costs real money and changes almost nothing for essay writing and research. The honest comparison.
Storage you do not need. 256GB is plenty for coursework across a full degree. Photos and downloaded video are what fill drives — and both belong on an external drive or in the cloud. How much you need.
A brand-new consumer laptop. At RWF 450,000, a new consumer machine gives you a plastic chassis, an entry processor and a two-to-three year life. A certified refurbished business laptop at RWF 390,000 gives you aluminium construction, a Core i5, and five or six years. This is the clearest saving available to Rwandan students.
A touchscreen you will not use. Convertibles carry a premium of RWF 40,000–80,000. Worth it if you take handwritten notes or diagrams; wasted if you only type. Be honest with yourself here.
What Students Consistently Underspend On
RAM. 4GB is the one specification that will genuinely frustrate you daily. If your budget forces a choice between a faster processor and more RAM, choose RAM every time. The comparison.

Making a Tight Budget Work
Buy business-class refurbished, not consumer new. The single highest-impact decision, worth roughly two years of extra service life for less money.
Buy 8GB and upgrade later if needed. Most HP EliteBooks and ProBooks have an accessible RAM slot. Buying 8GB now and adding 8GB when your course demands it is usually cheaper than buying 16GB up front. Ask us whether a specific model is upgradeable before you buy.
Buy at the start of a term, not the week before an exam. Stock and choice are far better outside peak periods, and rushed purchases are where people overpay.
